A Neighbor You Can Count On!

Used Gowns

More brides are selling their gowns than ever before, a growing trend now served by nearly forty websites.  www.PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com, a well-known site recently featured in the Wall Street Journal, reports 23% of brides now say they will sell their gowns.  45% say they would consider it.
Recycling appeals to “green” brides, of course, another growing segment of the market.  Surprisingly, however, most brides who elect to sell their gowns say they are selling because they want to share the gown with another bride–not because they want the money.  Of course, money is the object for many brides, and they can expect to recoup up to 50% of the price paid for the gown if it is in good condition and less than three years old.  Recently a used gown priced at $55,000 sold within twenty-four hours of listing at www.PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com
Here in Seattle we have http://blueskybridal.com/. Check them out for some great deals!

A few scenes from last year’s party.

Readers of this blog as well as soon-to-be-married folk know that boutique wedding shows—smallish, self-selected groups of vendors gathered in warm, welcoming environments, maybe with a theme or concept—are the way to go. And you could almost go every weekend if you wanted to. There are lots of opportunities to scout, meet, and hire wedding-day vendors.

But none more special than Get Hitched Give Hope. This boutique wedding show is a fundraising auction, a chance to meet and “hire” (more on that in a minute) top tier vendors, and a party. A really great one. This year’s event will be held on October 27 at the Four Seasons Hotel.

Vendors across categories such as photography, dessert, planning, and beauty have donated their services by rolling them into silent and live auction lots. Drink and appetizers in hand, you’ll stroll through the party chatting with these folks and figuring out who’s right for your big day. And you’ll bid appropriately.

But here’s where the great part comes in.

The vendors don’t take the money the receive from your bid. They essentially lend their talents to your celebration for free, and the money you pledged at the auction goes to help make someone else’s dream come true. Literally. This year’s GHGH charity is the Dream Foundation, the first organization aimed at granting wishes for adults facing life-threatening illnesses.

I’ve seen it three years in a row now: the pomp and party of the night combined with the knowledge that your party will be staffed by really amazing, truly generous people and it’ll completely change the final month’s of someone else’s life, well, it’s pretty darn magical.

And for the third year in a row, I’m part of the auction, too.

Brides in need of a seasoned, professional shopper—or perhaps, an unbiased outside opinion—can bid on an all-day boutique crawl with yours truly. The score includes:

-a sweet ride from Rare Form Limo for you, me, and a couple of your best gals
-a fully stocked champagne bin inside
-a pre-planned shopping trip focused on your needs, whether you’re looking for something special for the honeymoon, party dresses for the pre-wedding ramp up, accessories for the big day, lingerie for the big night, or anything else. In other words: Let me figure out where we need to go and what we need to check out—all you have to do is enjoy the ride.
-a stop off at Report Shoes headquarters where you’ll pick out a perfect pair

It’s just a little thing, all things considered, but I’m happy to be included.

Tickets are on-sale now. I hope to see you there.

Kim Kardashian’s Wedding Shut Down,
Guest and Ceremony Details

Kim-kardash-altar-250

If you’ve been keeping up with the Kardashian’s, you already know that Kim and her beau Kris Humphries tied the knot on Saturday in Montecito in a lavish affair in front of 450 guests.

But now there’s even more — Kim’s wedding apparently got shut down early due to noise complaints from cranky neighbors, reports Us magazine. After the two said “I dos,” guests were led to another tent to party the night away to tunes spun by DJ Cassidy — that is, until someone called the cops.

“They had to shut down the music early,” says an insider. Several local residents reportedly called with noise complaints and even Khloe couldn’t fix the situation. “She was talking to security guards — her friend’s family knows the mayor of Montecito and they tried even to get in touch with him. Everyone in the neighborhood knew this wedding was happening. Just let them have their fun!”

Before the music was shut down, an A-lister lineup including Robin Thicke (who sang their first dance, “Angel”) and Earth, Wind and Fire performed. And even though the music shut down around midnight, that didn’t stop some guests, like Ciara, Ryan Seacrest and Lindsay Lohan, from sticking around until around 2a.m., reports the NY Daily News. Insiders say that gal pal Brittany Gastineau was the one who caught Kim’s bouquet, but she left at the reception and Scott Disick, Kourtney Kardashian’s baby daddy, handed the bouquet over to Kim’s 15-year-old sister, Kendall, for safekeeping.
Pippa-middleton-lindsay-lohan-290

And speaking of Lindsay Lohan, the drama-prone actress managed to draw some attention to herself by trying to pull off a look similar to Pippa Middleton’s at the royal wedding. The two wore the exact same Temperley gown that Pippa wore for the evening reception for Kate and Prince William’s wedding earlier this year. The only difference? Pippa’s was in green, while Lohan wore the dress in white, reports Us magazine.

At the ceremony, sources confirm, Kim didn’t cry at the altar. “She was smiling the whole time,” an insider tells Us. Kris said during the ceremony that he admired how “passionate” his bride was, while during the reception, lesser-famous Humphries made a heartfelt speech. “they acknowledge it took some time to get used to Kim’s public life, but they have grown to accept and appreciate her amazing work ethic. They have never met someone who is so dedicated and hard working as Kim,” says the insider.

As for favors, guests left with a notepad featuring the happy couple’s picture, a candle wrapped in a KK-embroidered box, plus heart-shaped Krispy Kreme donuts. As for their welcome gifts, upon their arrival to the hotel, guests also received gift-wrapped Georgetown cupcakes (with the Kardashian-Humphries wedding monogram) along with a welcome note.

As for the cost of the gorgeous affair? Well, sources say that Kim didn’t have to pay a dime for the wedding, but will end up making $18 million. Now that’s how to throw a wedding.

Duches Kate’s wedding gown

Duchess Kate’s wedding gown attracts ‘record’ visitors

Monday Sep 5 2011

Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress has attracted a record number of visitors to Buckingham palace.

More than 350,000 people have attended the London royal residence in the past six weeks to catch a glimpse of the stunning gown worn by Catherine when she married Britain’s Prince William. The pair wed in Westminster Abbey in April of this year.

“We’re thrilled that so many people have visited Buckingham Palace this summer in what looks to be a record year,” a Royal Collection spokesman revealed.

“The Royal Wedding attracted worldwide interest, so it’s only natural that many people want to come to see the State Rooms, some of which were used for the wedding reception, and take a closer look at The Duchess of Cambridge’s dress – which celebrates great British design.”

Designed by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, the beautiful satin and lace gown with a nine foot train is not the only thing on display. The earrings, tiara and shoes worn by the brunette beauty are also available for fans to see. An artificial version of the bride’s bouquet and the original wedding cake are also included in the exhibition.

An estimated 500,000 visitors are expected to have seen the gown by the time the exhibition closes on October 3.

It is open seven days a week and tickets cost £17.50.

Wedding Gowns That Look Good Enough to Eat…Literally

Colombian chef Juan Manuel Barrientos has cooked up a pair of edible wedding gowns that are sure to make brides fall in love all over again. The gowns are made out of sugar-glazed rose petals and champagne clothe and even come with edible accessories.

It is a well-known fact that women love candy and weddings, so combining the two seems like a no-brainer. These edible wedding gowns were recently showcased in the Colombia city of Medellin with no current plans to bring them stateside…yet. The craving for candy is strong across the border.

Wedding Planning? There’s An app for that.

Some say that planning a wedding can be as stressful as moving into a new home or dealing with a death in the family. But it doesn’t have to be. From finding a dream wedding gown to creating a wedding registry, there’s an app for that.

A recent Pew Internet & American Life Project study found that one-third of American adults own a smartphone, and about 87 percent of smartphone owners access the Internet or email on their handhelds. The new wedding-focused apps are designed for “anyone on the go,” says Anja Winnika, site editor for TheKnot.com.

“This is the modern day bride,” she says. “If we’re not appealing to them on mobile, then we don’t have them anymore.”

Alexandria, Va. bride-to-be Katie Norton says while she hasn’t used a wedding planning app yet, “it might replace my dependence — or maybe supplement my use of — wedding blogs.” She adds that the apps would not take the place of her wedding planner because, “I think there is something about having a human connection that I am willing to pay for.”

Winikka says that while some people who can’t afford a wedding planner may use the apps in place of a person, she sees them as a complement. “Even people with wedding planners love to have an on-the-go checklist. They want to make sure they’re doing the right thing at the right time,” Winikka says.

“This is your techy best friend that is sort of holding your hand through the wedding planning,” she says.

TheKnot released its first smartphone app, Wedding 911, a couple of years ago and is now up to six, including an app for the iPad. Wedding 911 is described as an “on-the-go source for expert wedding advice.” The most popular feature is the integrated community of brides which are an instant resource for last-minute questions, like, “Which side does the bride’s family sit on?” ”911 is extremely popular,” Winikka says. “It’s the community, it’s the heartbeat of that particular app … It’s free, so that doesn’t hurt.”

Most of the apps available on iTunes and the Android Market are free to download, but have premium versions for a few more dollars.

High-end jewelry giant Tiffany & Co. offers the free Engagement Ring Finder for the iPhone, where prospective grooms (and future brides) can browse styles, view actual carat weights and determine ring size by placing a ring directly on the iPhone screen. The app is also available in other languages, just in case the bride- or groom-to-be is English, French, German, Italian or Spanish.

Last year, Brides Magazine launched the Wedding Genius app, which can be used for both the iPhone and iPad. The application helps busy brides plan their weddings with their smartphones, from picking a dress to finding a honeymoon locale. For a few more dollars, brides can have a virtual wedding planning binder to gather and organize images, track tasks and manage to-do lists.

As technology becomes even smarter, brides-to-be can turn to their phones for even more, Winikka says. In April, TheKnot.com launched Wedding Dress Look Book, which helps future brides find their dream gown. The app includes photos of thousands of gowns and includes sizing, price and geo-targeting, telling the bride which shops in her area carry the dress she wants. This Look Book app has had 500,000 downloads since its debut.

Beyond wedding dresses, there are also apps for choosing a color scheme from Color Toy or an app to find unique bridal party gifts through Etsy Addict.

One of Wininkka’s favorite apps is Gift Registry 360 which turns the iPhone into a bar code scanner and allows couples to add any item they want to their registry on the go.

“Your phone becomes the scanner gun. It’s amazing,” she says. “It also makes it fun.”

The Power of the Wedding Gown

This article I am sharing contains anecdotes from several women in South Florida reminiscing about their weddings, and more specifically, their gowns. You hear all the time that your wedding dress is the most important piece of clothing you will ever wear. Its importance lies not only in its beauty, but in the commitment it represents and the memories that that it reminds us of. The short stories in the article below details the various stories of these women, and how much their gown still means to them decades later.

Of course, the best way to ensure the beauty of your gown for decades to come is through a wedding gown preservation from certified specialists at National Drycleaners. A thorough cleaning, coupled with museum quality storage is the only way to guarantee the beauty of your gown will last for generations.

Terri Zimmerman wore her mother's, Donna's, dress, who found it in 1950 in an upscale department store window for $20, marked down from $100. Two of Donna's friends also wore the wedding gown and after 30 years of rest, the dress was worn by her daughter Terri in 1980. After Terri was married, she and her husband and children went to Ghana, Africa, as missionaries. Terri took the gown with her and two years later, when they returned, she left the dress there with some of the women she had befriended.

Fairytale Wedding Dresses

Any girls who ever grew up idolizing their favorite Disney princess can smile a little brighter. Alfre Angelo, world famous wedding gown designer, is reaching out to those women with a soft spot for fairytale princesses.

I think it is safe to say that most women will lose their minds when they discover Alfred Angelo’s new Disney Fairy Tale Wedding collection. Alfred Angelo’s Disney collection features seven different wedding gowns, each designed after a gown worn by a Disney princess. Classics such as Sleeping Beauty and Snow White are featured here, as are newcomers like The Princess and the Frog.

Each dress comes in white and are made to fit princesses of any size. It is a smart move by Disney in creating apparel aimed at an older demographic. The Disney Fairy Tale Wedding collection provides women who grew up idolizing princesses like Ariel or Belle the chance to get married looking just like them. Hopefully, this collection doesn’t influence a men’s spin-off.

A new business trend has seemingly unrelated businesses joining forces. A still lagging economy has forced businesses to become more imaginative in ways to cut costs and still offer a product and/or service of value to their customers. That’s just what has occurred at Wilton Quality Cleaners in Wilton Connecticut. You can read the whole story here.

These unusual partnerships have the ability to offer their owners a chance to provide for their customers at a lower cost in a time where money is still tight. The businesses can feed of each other and support one another on a daily basis. Their offerings complement each other nicely and provide the convenience of fewer stops for the consumer. In a time where everybody seems too busy to do anything, providing that extra convenience is important to consumers.

We will most likely continue to see partnerships like these continue. The convenience of one-stop shopping plus the added benefit to the business owner it too good to miss.

Fingerprinted Wedding Bands

These new WilliamsGoldsmiths rings are “imprinted with love.”

What better way to display your love for your partner than by wearing their fingerprint on your finger for life? WilliamsGoldsmiths rings make this possible. The designer duo of Jess and Brent Williams carefully handcraft each custom-made wedding ring. They mail out kits to happy couples who then make imprints of the fingers and mail them back to the jewelers. Jess and Brent then use this imprint to embed the chosen bands with the lines of their fingerprints.

The resulting bands are beautiful and sentimental. The fingerprints almost look like the pattern of tree bark, also representing life. WilliamsGoldsmiths rings are lovely for lovers.

Consumers crave methods of self-expression to avoid blending into the crowd. They seek products that are customizable to them and their tastes; these allow them to portray their values to their peers. Companies can cater to these expressive consumers by manufacturing customizable or personalized products.

This idea of customizations is especially true when it comes to weddings. Brides often find themselves searching high and low for a gown that feels unique and that feels like it was made to be worn solely by them. Couples work hard to find obscure venues, men come up with wacky ways to pop the question. People want to feel special. They want to stand out from the crowd.

With WilliamsGoldsmiths new bands, they can leave their imprint on the life of their loved one.

The Ultimate Green Wedding

National-Long-Logo.jpg

Weddings are costly. Not just financially, but environmentally as well. Creating an eco-friendly wedding has become a hot topic during the planning process for many couples. From recycled wedding gowns, finding LEED certified venues, to using sustainable and local food for the reception, couples are looking everywhere to reduce their carbon footprint without compromising the beauty and elegance of their special day. Not many have been as creative as the following couple, however.

Pete Geyer and Andrea Parrish have funded their eco-friendly wedding by recycling. The couple collected 400,000 aluminum cans that will fetch around $4,000 to pay for dresses, a DJ, food, and flowers.

The couple collected 280,000 cans themselves in 197 days; the remaining cans were donated by Alcoa and United Recycling Services. Pete Geyer and Andrea Parrish have reached the target for their July 31, 2010 wedding.

40% of their proceeds will go towards their marriage and honeymoon; the remaining 60% will be donated to Doctors Without Borders and the Rim Country Land Institute

However you choose to celebrate your love for one another, don’t let it come at the expense of our great planet!

More Wedding Gown Trends

Here are 10 wedding gown trends for the upcoming wedding season from our friends over at The Knot

1. Long Sleeves

Covering up has never been more couture. Sleeves in every fabric — from sheer lace to structured silk — are undoubtedly the most refined look of the season.

2. Feathers

Why walk down the aisle when you can float? Fanciful feathers are big on texture and light as air, even in the form of a voluminous ball gown.

3. Bows

No matter which way you tie them — structured, floppy, or oversize — bows are our favorite bridal detail of the moment.

4. Spirals

Traditional with a twist, dramatic cascading swirls give even the most basic silhouette a modern spin.

5. Straps

Strapless necklines not for you? Don’t worry. Offering a sophisticated alternative and lots of additional support, straps have secured their spot on the 2011 bridal scene.

6. Blush

Honeysuckle may be Pantone’s color of the year, but on the bridal runways, it’s all about blush! Think pretty shades of this subtle pink from ballet slipper to bubble gum.

7. Butterflies

Romantic blooms will always be a designer favorite, but this season we love the way nature’s most whimsical embellishment — butterflies — landed on wedding gowns just in time for spring.

8. Tiaras

Move over, Kate Middleton — you won’t be the only bride rocking a tiara this spring. We’re convinced that this showstopping accessory can make any dress feel like a princess gown.

9. Silver Embroidery

Forget sequins and crystals. This season, shimmer made its mark in the form of metallic thread. It popped up as delicate embroidery and sheer lace appliques on every silhouette.

10. Peplum Skirts

Our top silhouette this season is the peplum skirt. This ladylike ruffle gives the illusion of curvy hips and a narrow waist. What’s not to love?

Wedding Gown Trends for Summer 2011

It has long been tradition for the bride to walk down the aisle in a beautiful, white, ballroom gown. When else in her life will she realistically wear something so formal? Well, time’s change. While some people still believe in the tradition of a long, poofy dress, others are moving on. Short wedding gowns are making their way into the market. Perfect for a beautiful summer wedding on the beach, these shorter dresses will breathe better than a ballroom gown, and you can avoid dragging it through the sand and possibly ruining the gown. Shorter dressed can also make for a great secondary gown to party and dance in after the ceremony. Here are some of the gowns on the market today. All photos are form Martha Stewart Wedding.

Our friends over at SmartBrideBoutique.com put together a list of important questions to consider when researching for a dry cleaner to clean and preserve your wedding gown. You don’t want to leave your beautiful gown in the hands of someone who doesn’t know what they are doing. Here are 10 questions to ask:
1. Does the cleaner specialize in cleaning and preserving wedding gown?

Most cleaners do not do their own work when it comes to wedding gowns. They send them off to someone else, often someone else in another state. Not good. You want a cleaner who takes responsibility for your gown.

2. Ask if the cleaner has been specially trained and if the cleaner is a member of an Association.

The last thing you need is someone who is going to practice or “learn on the job” with your beautiful gown.
3. How many years has the cleaner been in business?

The cleaner may be very well trained, but years of experience count. The longer they have been in business the more likely they’ve cleaned gowns similar to yours.
4. What kind of solvent is the cleaner going to use on your gown?

A specialist knows that some solvents are gentler than others and will use the solvent best for your gown’s fragile beading and other decorations.
5. Does the cleaner handle solvents responsibly?

For example, members of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists provide a MuseumCareTM ZeroCarbonTM preservation. These preservations are Endorsed by the Association of Bridal Consultants and are truly green because they offset all carbon emissions with donations to Carbonfund.org to fund reforestation projects worldwide. Receive $35 off your cleaning and find a location near you.

Wedding Dress Preservation Boxes
6. What kind of guarantee does the cleaner provide?

Today or twenty-five years from today, who is going to honor the guarantee that your gown will still be in pristine, ready-to-wear condition?
7. Does the container allow the fabric to “breathe” with changes in heat and humidity?

Shrink-wrapping can trap moisture that may cause mildew and create an electrostatic charge that sets creases which no amount of pressing can remove.
9. What precautions does the cleaner take to protect the gown during the cleaning process?

Prongs, for example, around the beads on your gown can snag the fabric during the cleaning process. When it is packed, bows or flowers should be stuffed or protected with a nest of tissue. Bust pads should also be removed because they emit off-gases that will yellow your gown.
10. Can the cleaner actually get the dress clean?

Will all stains and “floor dirt” around the hem of the gown come out? Be aware that stains such as wine or ginger ale contain sugar and can dry clear. Over the years stains can turn brown, and such stains do not automatically dissolve during the cleaning process and require special care.
Believe it or not, cleaning is the most important part of the preservation process so look for a cleaner who will allow you to personally inspect your gown. And then look carefully to be sure your gown will be as lovely years from now as it was the day you wore that very special gown.

Royal Wedding Sets Benchmark for 2011 Summer weddings

The style, the glamour, and the romance of the Royal Wedding, just over two weeks ago, charmed people all over the world. Brides-to-be took notes of the décor, the floral arrangements, and of course, the now-Princess Kate Middleton’s dress.

Not every girl will walk down the aisle with a sparking Cartier tiara from the Queen herself, but most every girl will want to feel just like a princess on her own wedding day.

The brides of summer 2011 will be looking to the royal wedding for inspiration for their very own princess wedding.

“I can see people wanting to recreate the feeling of their wedding,” says Alexandra Fischer, a bridal event planner at Hollyburn Country Club. “Everybody wants to be a princess for the day.” She says the royal wedding’s green and white color scheme, from the trees in Westminster Abby to the bride’s bouquet, will be a new wedding trend. Fischer says we can expect to see more traditional weddings with a modern twist, just like the royal one. She also says the statement-making hats and fascinators worn by royal guests will be fashionable this year at weddings and showers.

Of course the wedding day isn’t really about the guests’ attire. Brides hoping to feel like a princess on their big day can find their very own royal gown in Vancouver. Local designer Jason Matlo created a dress for his bridal line inspired by Kate’s. Matlo says he maintained the silhouette of the duchess’ dress and replicated similar qualities, like the elaborate lacing. He says similar gowns will be the choice of brides to be.

“I have learned that all girls seem to get caught up in the fantasy of being a princess on their wedding day, so I think it will resonate with a lot of women and it will definitely influence a lot of bridal trends,” says Matlo.

Some of the pieces from Matlo’s bridal line are available at La Novia Bridal in Vancouver and he says he also takes requests for custom designed wedding gowns.

With the royal wedding influencing wedding trends, not just little girls want to be princesses, but brides-to-be, too. From attire to décor, expect to see royal elements in many weddings this year.

Wedding Gown Horror Story

A bride’s wedding gown may be the most important piece of clothing she will ever wear. Thats’ why it’s always ad to read stories like that of Danielle Biblehauser. Basically, Danielle brought her gown to a drycleaners for a preservation. When she came to pick up the gown, it was a different gown. The owner was never able to locate her gown and Danielle’s dream of having a duaghter walk down the aisle in her gown was ruined. To read the comlee story click this link, http://www.wave3.com/story/14540634/cleaners-loses-wedding-dress-says-bride-unreasonable.

As sad as Danielle story is, it should act as a wake up call to all brides out there. Had Danielle done her research, she would have discovered that there is a certified member of the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists in Jeffersonville. They not only have the training and knowledge to handle the most precious dress you will ever wear, they also have insurance to cover any damages or loss. It cannot be emphasized enough that although all cleaners will be happy to take in your wedding gown,  not all cleaners ca be entrusted to care for it with the special attention and care that it deserves. Do your research and avoid the headache!

What’s The Deal With the Royal Wedding?

Maybe it’s just me, but I have been having a hard time understanding why people are so  amped for Prince William and Kate Middleton to tie the knot on April 29th. I mean, they are just a couple of people who fell in love and decided to get married, right? If you listen to the Queen’s people speak, you will find out that this is much more than just an extravagant ceremony for a well-known member of British hierarchy. The Royal Wedding marks the first time a commoner has been fully accepted into the royal family. Score one for the common folk.

It seems as though the true significance of this momentous occasion can best be felt by those who feel a connection with the British Crown in one way or another. Richard Quest, a CNN correspondent who is covering the ceremony, discussed why the Royal Wedding is important to him. Says Richard, “I will watch the ceremony and feel apart of it because it continues something which has been with me all of my life.” Since William the Conqueror battled the beaches or Normandy in 1066 there have been 38 coronations and Westminster Abbey. As Quest puts it, “You don’t ignore a thousand years lightly.”

As a gown specialist, my curiosity lies more in what she will be wearing than the ceremony itself. Rumors are floating around that Kate actually designed the gown itself with inspiration from the Renaissance period. It will also reportedly have pearl buttons and a 10 foot train! I guarantee that thing will need some cleaning after being dragged around all day. Maybe if we’re lucky she will call us to preserve it for her. Realistically, fat chance, but a cool thought nonetheless.

Whatever your reason for tuning in, the Royal Wedding will surely be an event to behold. Congrats to William and Kate and may they live happily ever after.

ZeroCarbon™ Wedding Gown Preservations

Environmental responsibility and awareness are vital in today’s world to help sustain the health of our beautiful planet.  “Going green” is a way of life that more and more people are adopting and intigrating into their everyday routines.

Naturally, the green movement has made its way into the wedding industry. Brides are becoming more conscious of looking for vendors that use environmentally responsible business practices. Websites like Eco-BeautifulWeddings.com have emerged to help connect brides-to-be with vendors that have differentiated themselves in the market as eco-friendly. Even designers are starting to come out with environmentally-friendly gown collections.

As a 5 Star EnviroStar business, we have made great strides in working to eliminate the negative connotation of being a drycleaner. We use alternative solvents, energy-efficient machinery, compostable office supplies, etc. However, no matter what we do, we cannot produce a fully “green” wedding gown cleaning and preservation. No matter how eco-friendly the solvent used may be, cleaning and preserving a wedding gown produces carbon emissions. Not to mention the footprint left by the customer physically driving to and from the facility.

To solve this dilemma we have partnered with Carbonfund.org to bring to you ZeroCarbon™ gown cleanings and preservations. Carbonfund.org is the leading nonprofit provider of carbon offsets and climate solutions. Their mission is to make it “easy and affordable for any individual, business or organization to reduce & offset their climate impact and hasten the transition to a clean energy future.”

When you bring your gown to us, we will offer you the ability to reduce your carbon footprint by adding a nominal charge to your order. This extra charge is your donation to Carbonfund.org. Your donation will offset not only the cleaning and steaming of your gown, but the drive to and from the facility as well. 100% of your donation will go driectly to Carbonfund.org to support global renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation projects that reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

With our help, you can preserve the beautiful memories of you wedding day

and help our planet all at the same time!

Spring Cleaning

Hopefully the weather will be warming up soon, so now is a good time to think about inspecting and cleaning your winter sweaters.

You will want to inspect your sweaters for holes or snags.  If you find holes try to discern if the damage is from a tear or snag

Or from an insect. If it looks like insect damage then you will want to check the sweater very closely for more holes. You can do

This by holding it up to a light and looking through the sweater for thin or damaged areas.

Look for stains or soil and point out to your local dry cleaner and concerns you may have. Now is a good time to ask your

Cleaner if they de-pill your sweater as a service for their customers.

Once again I am very excited to announce that this July I will be joining the American Lung Association in Washington’s Climb for Clean Air, hosted by renowned mountaineer, Lou Whittaker. That’s right, I will be attempting to climb the 14,410 ft summit of Mount Rainier!

I have been very lucky to be involved with the American Lung Association of Washington since 2006, my first successful summit of Mt. Rainier. I really believe in what they stand for and are accomplishing for our great state. And what better way to raise awareness than to climb the most iconic peak in the west! There is no better way to stay healthy, support a great cause, and in the end make some lifelong friends. Not to mention being able to pal around with Lou Whittaker, and other climbing greats!

This is where I need your help. Your contribution will help the American Lung Association’s mission to:

  • Prevent lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, lung cancer, tuberculosis, and cystic fibrosis. Lung disease is the third leading cause of death in the United States each year.
  • Reduce tobacco use, especially among young people, that is responsible for one in five deaths in the U.S. each year.  Tobacco is responsible for more deaths than cocaine, heroin, alcohol, homicide, suicide, traffic accidents, fires, and AIDS, combined.  As a parent, this mission of the ALA is particularly important to me!

How can you help?  Make a tax-deductible donation to support the ALA Climb For Clean Air!

My suggested donation:

One penny ($.01) for each foot I climb, or $144.10 total to reach the summit of 14,410 feet!

Of course, all donations of any amount, large or small are greatly appreciated!  The easiest way to donate is online. Visit the Climb For Clean Air website at www.climbforcleanair.com, click on “Search for a Participant” and type in my name (Michael Erstad).  You can also donate by cash or check, given directly to me, or you can send a check made out to the American Lung Association in Washington

Your Destination Wedding

Recent years have seen a large increase in the popularity of destination weddings. We aren’t only talking about only the wealthy, either. Much of the growth of the popularity of destination weddings has come from the more “average” couple. A 2006 study found that as many as 16% of couples are choosing to take their nuptials on the road. That’s a 400% increase over the past 10 years!

So why are so many people deciding to get married outside of their hometowns, and make their friends and family travel thousands of miles to see them get hitched? The answer is simple, money. The average wedding costs about $27,000. Having your ceremony at a resort can dramatically reduce those costs. At a resort, you can actually cut your costs by inviting more guests. When guests stay at the resort as part of the wedding, you can lower your overall costs by negotiating group rates for rooms and social events.

According to destinationweddings.com, a properly planned destination wedding can “save you upwards of $20,000 off the cost of a traditional wedding. It can also turn your wedding day into an unforgettable ‘mini-vacation’ for you and your guests.”

Encourage your family and friends to see your destination wedding as an extended vacation. If they come in a few days before the main event or stay a few days after, you can get them a better rate than they would normally pay when coming to the resort independently. And they can enjoy all the amenities the resort has to offer.

Now that you have decided on your destination wedding, how will you get your gown there for the least amount of money without having to worry about the airline losing it? The answer lies in finding your nearest certified gown care specialist. There was a time when you could carry the gown with you on the plane and hang it in a storage cabin. Today most airlines insist you check your gown with your other luggage, so unless your gown is very informal you will need a large box or an extra suitcase to protect it.

We eliminate this hassle by offering brides the Original Destination Wedding Kit. These special boxes will not only protect your gown from damage during travel, but actually are designed to fit into the overhead space above your seat. No more worrying about checking your gown at the airport! Bring your gown to us and we will gently package it for you in the box complete with a lot of tissue paper to minimize wrinkling. Once you arrive at your destination, you should have your gown steamed by a certified specialist. Do your research on who will press your gown before your leave for your destination. You don’t want to leave something so important into the hands of someone who doesn’t know what they are doing. You are now ready to plan the destination wedding of a lifetime!

Mike Erstad Becomes First Seattleite to Receive Certified Garment Care Professional Title

Good companies always look for ways to stand out and differentiate themselves from competitors in their local markets. Sometimes the best and easiest way to do this is to be the first in your area to accomplish a specific feat. That’s what is happening at National Drycleaners in Seattle’s Crown Hill neighborhood where owner Mike Erstad has recently been awarded the title of Certified Garment Care Professional by the Drycleaning and Laundry Institute (DLI). Mike is one of only a small handful of people across the entire U.S. that has been given this distinction, and the first in Seattle. By acquiring the titles of Certified Professional Drycleaner®, Certified Environmental Drycleaner®, and Certified Professional Wetcleaner®, Mike has raised the bar for what it means to be a truly all-around garment care professional.

As Chief Executive Officer of DLI William E. Fisher notes, the fact that cleaners like Mike have recognized the importance of being fully educated in garment care and environmental responsibility has helped to “advance the professionalism of the industry.” In the coming years, we will surely find that more and more people work towards this certification, and one day it may become commonplace or even mandatory across the industry. However, it takes a seriously dedicated professional to go out and obtain a certification that so few have had even attempted to acquire. If you have any garment care questions, you can rest easy knowing that you have a certified expert just a call or click away!

Popularity of Pre-Owned Bridal Gowns

.
From the largest financial crisis since The Great Depression has sprung a very large trend in the wedding gown market, the popularity of purchasing pre-owned wedding gowns. The average new wedding gown today costs roughly $2,200. As people have become more conscious of their spending, many have resorted to opting for pre-owned gowns that sell for a fraction of the price.

Many websites have developed over the past few years to help connect engaged bries to people trying to sell their pre-owned gowns. Sites like SmartBrideBoutique.com and PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com offer brides a boutique like experience online. Brides can search for sellers in a specific area, specific designers, sizes, or by price. These websites are designed to get as much information about the pre-owned gown, requiring photos, any alterations done, original cost, and the overall condition of the gown.

This brings up the next point, which is cleaning of the pre-owned gown. In order to retain the moist value of your pre-owned gown, it’s very important to haver it cleaned as soon as possible after the ceremony. Make sure that the gown has been treated and cleaned by a certified gown care specialist, not just any regular cleaners. You can find the specialist nearest you at www.WeddingGownSpecialists.com. Not only will you rest easy knowing that your gown is in good hands, but you will undoubtedly increase the resale value as well.

Just like anything you are trying to re-sell to recoup some of the initial costs, you want to do all you can to increase its value to a potential buyer. A thorough gown inspection and cleaning by a certified specialist will put more money in back in you pocket, guaranteed.

National Drycleaners

After months of studying and an entire day of testing, I have received my Environmental Certification, (CED), and my
Professional Drycleaner Certification,(CPD) from the Drycleaning & Laundry Institute in Laurel, Maryland.
These certifications will go along with the Professional Wetcleaning Certification, (CPW) I already have.
I started the process about two years ago and was stopped short of finishing by first, my mother going in to the hospital for a infection related coma, and the next year my father having a major heart attack and five way by-pass surgery to fix his heart. I am happy to say that both parents are doing great. And we have a new member to the family! Welcome Addie Marie Muir, my niece Elizabeth and her husband Adam are her proud parents! Congratulations!
Ok, so back to work. We at National Drycleaners pride ourselves in continuing our education in our industry. It is my honest belief that we are second to none!
What this means for you is you can trust your most valued garments with National Drycleaners. That’s why we have brides coming from across the state to have us care for their Wedding Gowns. We are the Puget Sounds premier gown care Professionals. Cleaning, Preservation, Restoration.

Thanks,
Mike Erstad

Creases
I am certain that you have had slacks returned from the cleaner with a crease where there was none, without a crease when there was one, and occasionally with multiple creases. (I have even seen new slacks with double creases.)
Most drycleaners have a difficult time regulating this issue. When a pair of slacks has a hard crease, it is obvious to the staff, and the slacks are routinely returned to you with a crease. Drycleaners prefer to crease slacks because it is faster than steaming in a “soft roll” or pressing them without a crease.
When a pair of slacks is received by the cleaners with a soft crease, or it is badly wrinkled from being in a bag, the crease is not always obvious, and this is where the trouble begins. But if the cleaners do get the crease right, then they may ultimately fold it over a hanger when perhaps it should be hanging from the waist, either sideways or faced forward. It would help if the customer could make his or her preference clear.

Fun With Fabrics!!

I thought it might be nice given the weather this morning to share some fun facts about Gore-Tex!

What It Is

GORE-TEX® fabric is the registered trademark

name for fabric produced by W.L.

Gore & Associates, Inc., known also as

GORE-TEX Laminates. It is composed of a

white microporous polytetrafluorethylene

membrane (film) known as PTFE, laminated

to a shell fabric and lined with suitable

lining. This membrane contains nine

billion pores per square inch, each 20,000

times smaller than a drop of water, but 700

times larger than a water vapor molecule.

Therefore, the membrane has the ability to

differentiate between water as a vapor (gas)

and water as a liquid. Thus, the presence of

the membrane makes the fabric not only

waterproof but breathable at the same time.

It blocks rain and snow, but allows the

natural body moisture (vapor) to escape to

the outside, providing comfort

Stay dry! And remember: Fabrics can be fun!

Satin Weave

IDENTIFICATION
AND USE
Satin is a type of weave,
not a fabric. Made from
lustrous fibers such as
silk, rayon, and acetate,
satins are woven by passing a low twist yarn (usually
a horizontal filler yarn) under one yarn from
the opposite direction, then over four or more
yarns. This long, floating warp reflects light, creating
a shiny surface. Satins are popular for use in
wedding gowns, blouses, and draperies.

Sleeping Bags

What you should know about sleeping bags.

28 Jul

With the next long weekend just around the corner and my camping plans progressing nicely, I decided it was time to start prepping and getting things ready.

I started by trying to find my sleeping bag and my fleece blankets. You never know how cold the nights will be.

It took me a while to find my sleeping bag only to discover that I had not followed some basic storing instructions and my sleeping bag was now good for the garbage. Now I have to go and buy a new sleeping bag. Hopefully I will follow the cleaning and storing instructions after my trip.

Do – Have your sleeping bag cleaned after every use. Storing a dirty sleeping bag can damage the insulation and the nylon shell can absorb body odours.

Do – Air and spread out your sleeping bag frequently.

Do – Have your down sleeping bag cleaned by a professional. Dry cleaning will redistribute the down feathers effectively and evenly.

Do Not – Roll a sleeping bag up tightly and stuff into the carrying bag. Rolling tightly can compress the insulation over time reducing its effectiveness. It is best to stuff your sleeping bag into a breathable storage bag like those used at Parkers Cleaners.

Do Not – Leave a sleeping bag stored in the trunk on a hot day. The heat can cause the material to bind together.

Do Not – Try to clean a sleeping bag on your own. Down sleeping bags should be left to the experts who deal with down items such as parkas, duvets and pillows. Synthetic sleeping bags may be damaged in the dryer due to high temperatures.

Remember to have your gown preserved after the wedding for future generations.
