What’s The Deal With the Royal Wedding?
Maybe it’s just me, but I have been having a hard time understanding why people are so amped for Prince William and Kate Middleton to tie the knot on April 29th. I mean, they are just a couple of people who fell in love and decided to get married, right? If you listen to the Queen’s people speak, you will find out that this is much more than just an extravagant ceremony for a well-known member of British hierarchy. The Royal Wedding marks the first time a commoner has been fully accepted into the royal family. Score one for the common folk.
It seems as though the true significance of this momentous occasion can best be felt by those who feel a connection with the British Crown in one way or another. Richard Quest, a CNN correspondent who is covering the ceremony, discussed why the Royal Wedding is important to him. Says Richard, “I will watch the ceremony and feel apart of it because it continues something which has been with me all of my life.” Since William the Conqueror battled the beaches or Normandy in 1066 there have been 38 coronations and Westminster Abbey. As Quest puts it, “You don’t ignore a thousand years lightly.”
As a gown specialist, my curiosity lies more in what she will be wearing than the ceremony itself. Rumors are floating around that Kate actually designed the gown itself with inspiration from the Renaissance period. It will also reportedly have pearl buttons and a 10 foot train! I guarantee that thing will need some cleaning after being dragged around all day. Maybe if we’re lucky she will call us to preserve it for her. Realistically, fat chance, but a cool thought nonetheless.
Whatever your reason for tuning in, the Royal Wedding will surely be an event to behold. Congrats to William and Kate and may they live happily ever after.
